What to expect from a Logo Designer. I have a lot of people ask me, "What's included when you develop a logo for someone?" In my case the answer is a long one. I choose to provide my customers with more files on their logo than they will probably ever need, and I deliver those files as a hard copy on CD-R. First of all don't use any designer that wants to limit the number of revisions, colors or mockups you get for a set price. If they are using different packages for logo design then they are only out for more money. For instance if they offer to design your logo for $99.00 with three revisions, three mockups and 2 colors, that means that if you need a fourth revision, fourth mockup or third color added to your logo, they are going to charge you extra for it. Go with a logo designer that has a great portfolio and that offers unlimited revisions. A logo designer that will work until you are happy for one low flat rate is a valuable asset. There are however, only a few designers online that will actually promise this. Also avoid the designers that state they can turn over a project in two days or less. Just the act of going back and forth with revisions will take longer than this. Expect your logo design project to take at least 5 business days. It's also best to make sure they will provide your logo on a hard copy CD-R. That way if you lose or alter the files they give you through email by accident, you have the hard copy to fall back on. Most professional logo designers will also offer a free archiving service, where they will keep a copy of the source file for your logo within their archives. Then if you lose your disk and need another copy of the logo they can provide you with one. Some do this for free and some charge a small fee. So what file types should your logo design provide? The most important two are EPS and AI. These are the original source files to your logo, which means a printer can take your logo and alter the colors, text, etc... You should also get a few TIF and JPGs in high resolution for printing from your home computer, as well as low resolution GIF files for use on the internet. Just be sure you know what you are getting before you pay anything. Ask questions concerning the printing process, delivery formats, etc... Make sure that the designer knows more about these things than you do. More often than not, they won't. And if they don't, find yourself another designer, fast.
