Unique & Interesting Logos.

As a logo designer I spend lots of time looking at other people's logo designs.  Whenever someone hires me to design a logo one of the first things they do is to send me to websites that have logos that they like.  Sometimes the logos are very odd or peculiar.
I find it very interesting the vast number of styles that are out there.  Much of this has to be attributed to logo designers coming from all over the world.  If you had a Canadian, a US and a German designer work up logo ideas for you from the same basic idea that you provided, you would get vastly different logo concepts.
The same is true even within the United States.  If you have ever used sites like elance.com where designers bid on projects that you place there, you will see by the portfolios and mockups they provide that design skills, standards and styles vary greatly, even from one state to the next.
I've also noticed that animals play a large part in logo design, as do cartoons.  This is one way to make a logo memorable and instantly recognizable to current and potential clients.  Who doesn't think of the giant bug on top of the trucks when they call the Terminex™ man.  Or Smokey the Bear, one of the greatest uses of an animal in a logo and ad campaign in history.   More often this is true of food logos, look at the cereal box in your cabinet, it probably has a toucan on it, or a frog, chimpanzee, dinosaur, etc....  Animals and cartoons are great attention getters.
In general the more interesting the logo design, the more memorable.  So when you have your logo developed bear this in mind, stay away from the boring everyday designs you see on most logo developer sites, avoid the "generic swish symbol" or "circles surrounding plain text" type logos at all costs.  Search out the designers that put concerned time and effort into a great logo design that will aid your company in developing a strong customer base.
